My Story & My Journey: The Heart & Inspiration Behind Dr. Cheryl Wellness
Hello, I'm Dr. Cheryl. Two decades ago, I began my journey
as a registered dietitian and cookbook author, driven by a
passion for food as medicine and a desire to help people eat better,
live well, and enjoy delicious, healthy meals.
My curiosity about food as medicine and wholistic wellness led me to dive deep into nutrition science to become a trusted expert and to find proven solutions and innovate better tools to help make a real difference in people’s lives.
In 2005, my life changed forever when my 17-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a rare cancer. After a heartbreaking 9-month battle, she passed away. This profound loss challenged everything I knew and ignited a mission within me. I pursued a doctorate in clinical nutrition at Rutgers to discover foods and wellness habits more powerful than conventional treatments.
In my first decade as a dietitian, I published several best-selling cookbooks, including “More Choice: Eat Well, Live Well,” authored as Cheryl Thomas Peters. Inspired by my mother who showed me that food was more than nutrition; it was for enjoyment, comfort, and love. I focused on creating recipes that were both healthy and delicious, helping people find meals find breakfasts, lunches, and dinners they loved to eat and would move to their weekly family favorite meals. This was the first step in creating a sustainable wellness routine beyond dieting.
During my doctoral training, I developed an innovative, science-backed wellness method with my nutrition prescription outlined in the "Wellness Score". It's a metabolic health assessment tool summarized in a 20-point score. It identifies the healing foods and habits at the optimal daily dose and makes up the foundation of the Dr. Cheryl Wellness Method. The full member version of the score tracks success and gauges progress. I designed this tool to help people create a personalized daily wellness lifestyle tailored to their tastes, lifestyle, and goals. Higher daily scores over time correlate a greater impact on improving metabolic health, transforming the body, building muscle, preventing or managing existing risk factors and adding more vibrant years of life.
To complement the Wellness Score, I created the Dr. Cheryl Plate. It's my meal planning tool which incorporates the top ten foods from the Wellness Score to help you build meals designed to cut cravings, reduce the glucose curve, balance blood sugar, build muscle, boost energy, heal and combat disease.
After earning my doctorate, I co-created the TakeTEN 10-day Nutrition & Lifestyle Program with my late spouse, Dr. James Peters. This immersive wellness program was the pilot experiment for the Dr. Cheryl Wellness Method and demonstrates the power of the Method to eat meals and practice habits that will balance blood glucose and transform health. Over 2000 clients achieved remarkable improvements in their Wellness Scores, moving from an average of 7 to 19+ points in just ten days. The impact of this health transformation empowered people to score up their daily wellness routine with the daily Wellness Score and score up their plate using my simple meal planning tools the Dr. Cheryl Plate meal to build meals they love and help them live their best life. This pilot experiment shows the power of the Dr. Cheryl Wellness Method delivered in a online program and membership.
