Hibiscus iced tea with orange & strawberry

This hibiscus flower-flavored iced tea is packed with colorful antioxidants and ingredients that heal, and is naturally sweetened with oranges and strawberries.

About the recipe

Hibiscus iced tea

This iced tea is packed with colorful antioxidants and ingredients that heal, and is naturally sweetened with oranges and strawberries. It’s a great daily option for staying deliciously hydrated and has the benefit of helping lower blood pressure, too! Let it infuse overnight for a rich flavored cold brew, or steep with hot water and enjoy in just a few hours. Sweeten to taste using fresh fruit!

Ingredients

Portion size: 8 ounces

  • 1/4 cup hibiscus flowers, dried

  • 1 quart cold water

  • 1 orange, peeled, sliced

  • 4 strawberries, sliced

  • Garnish with orange slices, strawberry slices, and lime or mint sprigs

Directions

Cold brew method:

01

Place the dried hibiscus flowers in a quart size jar or pitcher.

02

Pour 1 quart of cold water over the hibiscus flowers.

03

Cover and let the cold herbal iced tea brew / infuse for 30 minutes minimum. The longer the infusion sits, the darker the water will become – and the darker red the water is, the stronger the hibiscus flavor will be. Letting this infuse overnight in the refrigerator is how many people prefer this tea. However, the flavor will be much more bitter and may require more fresh oranges and strawberries to sweeten the iced tea.

04

Strain the tea to remove the hibiscus flowers when the tea has reached your desired strength. The darker the red color the more antioxidants and health benefits you will get from this tea. If you want this to be a wellness shot, infuse the tea all night. The hibiscus will have the strongest flavor when the red color is darkest!

05

Squeeze the orange slices and drop them into the strained tea. Add the strawberries slices and store covered in the refrigerator ready to enjoy for several days. For a sweeter flavor, squeeze more orange slices into the tea and add more strawberries.

06

hibiscus tea

To serve, pour the hibiscus tea over ice and garnish with orange, strawberry, or lime slices or a sprig of mint.

Steeping method:

01

Put the hibiscus dried flowers and water together into a saucepan and bring them to a boil. Continue boiling the hibiscus for about 3 minutes.

02

Add the orange slices to the saucepan and cook additional 30 seconds. If using fresh ginger, add with the orange slices.

03

Steep the tea: Set tea aside and steep for at least 4 hours. Steep the tea to your favorite concentration or richness of flavor.

04

If sweetening the tea with honey, add to the tea while it is still warm and stir to dissolve.

05

Strain the infused tea into the pitcher or jar. Adjust flavor with fresh orange slices squeezed, strawberries. Cover and chill until serving.

06

To serve, pour the tea over ice and garnish with fresh oranges, strawberry, lime slices or a sprig of mint.

Tips

01

Ice Blended Version:
Try this delicious variation to this antioxidant-rich wellness shot. After the tea infusion steeps to your favorite concentration or richness in flavor, place the strained tea into a blender container and add 1 to 2 tablespoons of fresh mint and ice. Blend and serve iced cold immediately. The mint boosts the tea flavor and adds even more healing nutrients from a green leafy herb to your wellness shot.

02

Sweetening options:
This tea should have plenty of natural sweetness from the oranges and strawberries without the need for honey or other refined sugar sweeteners. But if you prefer a sweeter iced tea, you have several options. Steep the tea to your favorite concentration or richness of flavor. Add more oranges and slightly squeeze the juice into the tea to add more sweetness. The strawberries add lots of sweet natural flavor as well. Some people add fresh stevia leaves to the hibiscus flowers during the brewing process to add more natural sweetness. The longer you steep the tea, the richer the flavor and the darker the red color of the hibiscus tea, the greater the therapeutic effect will be. Some people like the strong flavor of the hibiscus tea and simply add a touch of honey to the warm tea during the steeping process so they can drink the tea as strong as possible and get the greatest therapeutic benefit. The fresh mint blended version is delicious as well and adds a great flavor. The fresh ginger mint variation is also delicious if you want to try to add different flavors to this tea. Stevia leaves have no calories and have a natural sweet flavor.

03

Wellness Shot Therapeutic Method:
The longer you steep the tea the richer the flavor, and the darker the red color of the hibiscus tea, the greater the therapeutic effect will be. You can let the hibiscus leaves and water fully infuse the herb and flavors for 30 minutes for a very light flavor or a several hours or overnight for a stronger tea. The longer the herb tea leaves steep and infuse in the water, the more colorful antioxidants will be extracted from the hibiscus flower. This will make the flavor much more rich and to some this tastes bitter and a darker red color - but this is how you boost the therapeutic benefits and create a daily wellness shot. This daily wellness shot will have powerful health benefits like relaxing blood vessels within hours after drinking which will support decreasing blood pressure. If you make this wellness shot a daily routine, blood pressure will improve and you will be using food to fight cancer and cardiovascular disease and even diabetes.

04

Variation: Ginger Mint Hibiscus Tea
1. Prepare the Hibiscus Tea with the preferred brewing method.
2. Prepare fresh ginger. Cut a 1-inch piece and peel the outer layer with a potato peeler and slice fine.
3. Add the ginger to the hibiscus flowers during the steeping phase of either brewing method.
4. Strain the tea and serve over ice with mint leaves.

Note: My favorite Method is the Cold Brew steeped overnight in the refrigerator in a sealed Yeti and infused with 2 oranges and 4 strawberries. In the morning I pour this cold brewed tea into another yeti or mason jar through a sieve to remove all the tea leaves and fruits and refrigerate for up to one week. When ready to serve, I pour this over ice and garnish with orange, strawberry and lime slices and for a special occasion add a sprig of mint. This is the perfect flavor concentration and sweetness for my preferences. Try this wellness beverage and find your favorite formula.

We read on line that bananas will cancel out the goodness of the other fruits and veggies. Is this true?

-I am a fan of bananas. They get a bad rap on social media with those focused on carbs being bad and looking at continuous blood sugar monitoring. Bananas are a whole plant food loaded with soluble fiber. Soluble fiber helps us bind and delay the surge of blood sugar to improve insulin resistance and helps to keep us full AND removes cholesterol from our body. When we eat bananas as part of a meal or snack that has protein and healthy plant fats, we can get all the wins of bananas with high fiber and healthy carbs and not end up with a blood sugar spike from that meal. For athletes and those exercising regularly, bananas are a great way to fuel the body and replenish the muscle fuel glycogen. So if you are moving and eating healthy meals, bananas can be part of your diet and wellness routine. They are personally one of my favorite fast foods to eat.

Here is my problem- I am a Type I diabetic and 74 grams (in my experience- a recent diagnosis) would take a lot of short acting units of insulin 4 units for 80 grams. I’m concerned about this. Wonder is this is the program for me?

-I specialize in diabetes care and have helped hundreds of people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. There is 74 grams of total carbs in this smoothie and 23 grams of these carbs are from fiber since the ingredients are all whole plant foodsI What we teach in Dr. Cheryl Wellness is how to count carbs and focus medication dosages on NET carbs - so this smoothie as it is has 51g of net carbs and this is a full meal replacement that will keep you full for 4 hours. So if you need 1 unit of short acting insulin for every 20 grams of carbohydrate (as you noted in your comment your Rx is with type 1 diabetes), you would need 2.5 units of insulin for this full meal smoothie. I help members adapt a meal plan and wellness routine that works for them even with type 1 diabetes. People with Type 1 Diabetes, you can become insulin resistant and so it takes both food and lifestyle habits to help you become more insulin sensitive and at the same time not let you miss out one getting the healthy antioxidants you need to combat other diseases, have a healthy gut, and add more healthy years. You get these protective antioxidants from whole fruits and vegetables and too many health professionals are stripping these away from those with diabetes with the siloed focus of blood sugar and not exploring ways your body can maximize on all the benefits of whole fruits and vegetable and whole food carbohydrates, protein and fat and at the same time balance your blood sugar to optimize your insulin dosage. For you, I would suggest adding 10 more grams of protein to this smoothie in the form of 1/4 cup more of nuts or adding greek non-fat yogurt or a scoop of pea or whey protein powder if you prefer. I will work with you in my membership to find the right formula for each of your meals so you can optimize your nutrition and balance your blood sugar. My husband was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s disease at 67. His symptoms were shuffling of feet, slurred speech, low volume speech, degradation of handwriting, horrible driving skills, and his right arm is held at 45 degree angle. He was placed on Sinemet for 7 months and then Sifrol and rotigotine were introduced which replaced the Sinemet but he had to stop due to side effects. We tried every shot available but nothing was working. There has been little if any progress in finding a reliable treatment, he has to quit his meds due to side effects. Our care provider introduced us to Aknni Herbs Centre Parkinson’s herbal treatment. The treatment is a miracle. My husband has recovered significantly!
