Easy and Sweet Bonbons

A twist on this classic dessert made perfectly sweet from whole plant foods with no added processed sugars. A great treat for the chocolate lover!

About the recipe

I created these Bonbons many years ago to give my kids a healthy dessert option. As an added plus, they also make a great breakfast on the go when traveling or busy.

Sometimes I make half of my batch with the chocolate coating and half without to function less as a dessert and more as a breakfast or snack.

This is a wonderful recipe to include your kids in the process! I would often have my kids help me mix up the inside mixture and form the ball shape together.

Bonbons get their name from the French word for “good” - bon. What a fitting name for this sweet dessert that is so very good! They’ve been served in French royal courts since the 16th century.

Classically, a Bonbon is a small confection that is always covered in a chocolate outer layer. The mixture of ingredients on the inside is part of the fun! Many a pastry chef have exercised their creative freedom on what to fill their Bonbons with.

This recipe takes my whole-plant food approach to wellness and applies it to this delectable treat. Nuts, dates, coconut, and pure vanilla combine to create a beautifully sweet filling that we then coat in 70% pure dark chocolate.

Keep a stash of these on hand in your freezer for when you’re craving a sweet treat, but want to continue to nourish your body with healing foods. Enjoy!

Ingredients

Makes 14 Bonbons - 1½ inch round or 1½ ounce each | Serving Size 1 Bonbon

  • 3/4 cup medjool dates, pitted and finely chopped

  • 3/4 cup natural almond butter, creamy

  • ½ cup pecans, coarsely chopped

  • ½ cup coconut flakes, unsweetened

  • ½ cup puffed brown rice or millet, unsweetened

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Ingredients for Dark Chocolate Glaze:

  • 6 ounces (¾ cup) 70% dark chocolate pieces

Directions

01

bonbon ingredients

In a large mixing bowl combine chopped dates, almond butter, chopped pecans, coconut, puffed brown rice or millet, salt, and pure vanilla extract. You may need to use both hands to combine the mixture well enough to form into balls.

02

Form 1 ½ inch Bonbon balls and place them on parchment-lined baking sheets. Place in the freezer for 30 minutes before adding the chocolate topping, though Bonbons are delicious treats even without the dark chocolate topping.

03

A bowl with melted choclate for dipping the bonbons

Prepare Dark Chocolate Glaze for dipping the Bonbons. Heat a double boiler with a bowl or pan over boiling water. Place the dark chocolate pieces into the double boiler and stir continuously while melting the chocolate. Remove Bonbons from the freezer and dip each into the melted chocolate, coating all sides, and place back on parchment paper. Repeat with each Bonbon.

04

Fresh made chocolaty bonbons

Place the coated Bonbons back in the freezer and chill until serving.

Tips

01

I keep these Bonbons in the freezer in a sealed container with parchment between layers, ready for whenever I want a quick dessert. The Bonbons thaw quickly, so they can be pulled out of the freezer and be ready to eat in just 5-15 minutes of thawing.

02

Enjoy 2 or 3 Bonbons as a delicious breakfast bar without the chocolate topping and add some fresh fruit to top off the meal. Or grab a Bonbon as a quick snack. Add the dark chocolate glaze and turn this into a tasty dessert loaded with whole plant healing foods.

03

These are kid-approved Bonbons, I designed for my children when they were young. The recipe is also kid-friendly, with many easy steps for kids to make with you. My kids loved forming the balls into many sizes and shapes and enjoying these as their favorite snacks.
